ExoProtect™
Innovative ballistic resistant composite material designed for protection solutions and armoured products.
Conventional protection systems frequently sacrifice strength to weight – necessitating a dangerous compromise. Other solutions simply cannot provide the requisite protection in the most demanding environments. Further operator compromises are required when partial and retrofitted solutions are mechanically applied to a vehicle or vessel. ExoProtect™ delivers a smarter solution. This low-thermal conductive, corrosion resistant, superior strength composite material can be formed to flat, curved, custom and precision shaped designs and geometries of tactical marine craft, in-service military combat vehicles and aircraft. It delivers essential ballistic resistance against high-velocity projectiles, explosive fragments, and can provide underfloor protection to protect against high-impact debris damage during operational service. ExoProtect™ is comparably lightweight as similarly sized ceramic protection and unlike other polyaramid fibres (e.g. Kevlar) its performance is not compromised by water. It is strong enough to meet NIJ Level III and IIIA ballistic resistance standards.

Threats and Instrumentation:
Threats:
- .22-cal, 40-gr, Long Rifle High Velocity (LRHV) Lead projectiles
- 38 Special, 158gr, Lead Round Nose (RN) projectiles
- .357-mag, 158-gr, Jacketed Soft Point (JSP) projectiles
- 9mm, 124-gr, Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) projectiles
- .44-mag, 240-gr, Lead Semi-Wadcutter Gas Checked (LSWCGC) projectiles
- 7.62 x 51mm, 150-gr, FMJ projectiles
- .30-06-cal, 166-gr, Armor Piercing (AP) projectiles
Instrumentation:
Projectile velocity measurements were obtained using Oehler Research model No. 57 infrared screens with Y.I.S. Cowden Group Chrono-USB chronographs. Calibration data is provided in the final report.
Details of Test:
The objective of this test was to conduct a ballistic resistance test on each armour sample IAW NIJ-STD-0108.01 (Modified) and the customer’s request. Shot spacing between multiple impacts on a single sample was IAW the referenced performance standard. Shots against the armour samples were performed at 0.0° obliquity and at ambient range temperature as indicated on each sample’s data sheet.
For each shot, the sample was rigidly clamped to a steel target fixture. All firings for testing for NIJ-STD-0108.01 Levels I – IIIA were taken with the sample positioned 16.4-ft from the muzzle of the test barrel. All firings for testing for NIJ-STD-0108.01 Levels III and IV were taken with the sample positioned 50-ft from the muzzle of the test barrel. All projectile velocities were IAW the referenced performance standard.
