After an impressive twenty-year career in chartered accounting, Shane Mugan chose a dramatically different path inspired by a chance ski lift encounter with Admiral Michael Silah, a retired director of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Colorado in 2015. This serendipitous meeting led to a groundbreaking venture into the maritime industry, driven by a desire to introduce revolutionary products and ideas.

Together, Mugan and Silah identified major opportunities for innovation within the marine sector, particularly focusing on creating a recyclable alternative to glass fibre and enhancing hull design to improve the load capacity of high-speed craft. This vision gave birth to two pioneering UK-based organizations: Exo Technologies and Ultimate Boats. Exo Technologies, headquartered on the Isle of Man, developed a recyclable material poised to transform not just maritime construction but various industries. Meanwhile, Ultimate Boats in Glasgow specializes in utilizing this innovative material to craft high-performance military, work, and leisure boats.

Their first major success was the introduction of the world’s first fully recyclable work boat in June 2022—an 11-meter high-performance patrol boat, marking a significant step towards sustainable maritime engineering. This milestone was followed by other specialized craft, further proving the viability and demand for eco-friendly marine solutions.

Shane Mugan’s journey from accounting to innovative maritime solutions highlights a significant shift towards sustainability in the workboat industry, showcasing how innovative materials and design can revolutionise an entire sector.
